October 2025 bond update: Projects advance as new school, housing, and facility plans take shape

Citizen Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC)

The CBOC continues to meet monthly to oversee spending, ensure it aligns with ballot language, and review the budget.

Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC)

The LRPC last met in September, continuing work on a long-term school replacement plan and exploring options for the future of the Florida Mesa Elementary School (FMES) campus once Three Springs Elementary School opens in fall 2028.

There is strong support for converting FMES into an expansion site for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming, potentially including building trades (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; plumbing; and electrical), aviation, automotive and diesel mechanics, healthcare specialties, welding, early childhood education, and hospitality and tourism. The district will assess the feasibility of such programs at this location. These discussions are in the early stages, and represent just a few of the ideas that have come from the committee related to this topic.

Three Springs Elementary School

The Design Advisory Group has several meetings remaining, and smaller user group sessions have begun to refine plans for specific spaces and uses. The district will host an open house on Nov. 6 to share schematic designs with the Three Springs community and the general public.

Workforce housing

The district purchased 35 apartment units at the Lightner Creek Village Apartments in October 2025. The units will transition to workforce housing, with availability as early as fall 2026.

Elimination of leased facilities

In October 2025, the district closed on a new warehouse that will allow all leased facilities to be phased out by fall 2026. Technology staff will move to the District Administration Office in November or December 2025, while Facilities and Custodial staff will relocate to the new warehouse during the same period. Durango Big Picture High School (DBPHS) will move into its new facility in fall 2026. We are proud to have accomplished this goal so quickly (just one year after passage of the bond in Nov 2024).

A copy of the master schedule will be included in all future updates. It is critical to note that, with a program this large, things may change along the way.
