A world leader in history and civics education, National History Day is a nonprofit education organization improving the teaching and learning of history.
“We at Escalante are extremely proud of all our students for their projects this year,” said Rob Javier, EMS Social Studies teacher. “This year's group that competed at the state competition were particularly successful as each created a strong thesis supported by primary sources and well-written explanations.”
In total, seven EMS projects qualified for the final round, placing them in the top eight projects statewide. Ila Buscaglia, Zee Wallach, Owen Blouin, Abbey Reeder, Marley Stordeur, and Van Gianesin, competed in the finals.
The National History Day 2023 contest theme invites the exploration of topics in the history of science, art, technology, medicine, religion, politics, social change, and the military. The three EMS entries heading to the national competition are:
- Jasmine DeBoer, Maizy Hill, and Charlotte Townes came in second place with their group performance, “Ann Sullivan and Hellen Keller: The Lives That Opened Doors.”
- Coulee Fox came in second place with his historical paper, “The Frontier of Indian Law Reform: How Cobell v. Salazar Opened the Door to US Government Accountability.”
- Sophia Valdez is the Colorado State Champion taking first place with her Individual Performance, “Conference of Firsts: The Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.”
