Green Team

Protect the Earth.    Make Friends.     Be a Leader.    Have Fun!

What are Green Teams? Durango School District 9-R supports Green Teams at each of its schools. A Green Team is an after-school club geared toward helping the environment. We will concentrate on getting educated, spreading the word, and then taking action. Green Teams are active and interactive. With an adult advisor’s supervision, students will do their own research and develop group projects around reducing waste, recycling, conserving energy, and creating green spaces. Projects will be practical and focus on improvements that can be made at the school. We will also work on a District-wide Earth Day project combining our efforts across schools.

What did the EMS Green Team accomplish in the 2023-24 School Year?
Six students actively participated on the team.
  • Identified areas of improvement for reducing waste and energy use around the campus.
  • Organized and implemented a "Lights Out!" electricity conservation campaign video shown in Crew classes.
  • Attended field trip to The Point radio station and recorded a "Lights Out!" PSA.
  • Created and staged a "Turn the Key, be Idle-Free" campaign to align with Board of Education proclamation to prevent idling on school campuses.
  • Built and decorated Solar Race Cars as awareness campaign for Veregy solar panel intstallations at EMS.
  • Met with Durango High School Green Team students to learn about their projects.
  • Generated a list of ideas for recruiting new Green Team members for 2023-24.

What are the team’s meeting details for 2023-24? There will be eight meetings, held the first Wednesday of each month from 3:30-4:30 p.m. starting in October. We will meet in Room 512 (up from the office, turn right, door is on the left). Participants do not need to attend all meetings, but they should plan to be at most of them. Participants should also plan to support/attend Earth Day Durango on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Buckley Park. The club will also support Earth Week events held at the school in April. Here are the meeting dates:
